While businesses often prefer Vehicle Technicians with experience, this can also be an entry level role. You are able to gain practical experience through, apprenticeship programs, work placements or new Vehicle Technicians usually receive on-the-job training. A Vehicle Technician reports to a Workshop Supervisor/Controller or Aftersales Manager. These professionals tell Vehicle Technicians which vehicles they are working on. Workshop Supervisors/Controllers or Aftersales Managers often have a high amount of knowledge, so when working as a Vehicle Technician, they can support the  Vehicle Technicians diagnose and treat complex vehicle issues.

Typically, Prep Technicians can expect to earn between £22,000 and £28,000, Service Technicians £25,000 and £34,000, Diagnostic Technician between £30,000 and £40,000, and Master Technicians between £35,000 and £45,000. These salaries can differ by employer/manufacturer with some of these salaries already containing OTE.

OTE or On Target Earnings is usually the sum of your base salary plus any commissions or bonuses – the total compensation an employee can make if they meet all of their performance targets. An OTE salary system is often used as a commission incentive to encourage employees to meet their targets.

Working hours and days can vary. Commonly, Vehicle Technicians can expect to work standard industry hours, Monday to Friday. However, they may also be on a rota if the workshop is open on weekends, or in the evenings. Overtime may also be necessary to meet deadlines. Part-time work may be possible.
